Week 13: Usability Testing






We began the technological research and examined several possible sensors for generating heat and for the activation mechanism of the blanket.


Using the 1:1 (A new size model, 1.70 meters tall) prototype, we conducted tests on 5 users, all of whom had previously experienced the blanket concept in earlier user tests.


The goal of the test was to examine various types of activation mechanisms for the blanket to create interaction with the user. The aim was to identify the optimal activation mechanism for the blanket.

The following activation methods were examined:

  • A pressable button located on or attached to the blanket

  • Hugging or placing arms over the blanket, and touching a dedicated area on the blanket that functions as a sensor

  • A blinking light that must be touched

  • A free method – each user was asked during the test what method was most intuitive for them to activate the blanket, to explain why, and whether it was better than the other methods tested


Findings from User Testing:


Except for one user, four users felt uncomfortable with the hugging method over the blanket. The main reason was that it was inconvenient for them to take their hands out, place them over the blanket, and then return them underneath to get comfortable before the meditation session. One user did feel comfortable with this method and said it helped her ease into the meditative situation nicely.

When asked to come up with a free method, four users chose to use voice activation in different forms, whether via sound or speech.

Additionally, they suggested different types of buttons and presses, whether on the blanket itself or connected externally.

Users did not enjoy the blinking light as a main activation method but agreed it could be a nice addition suited to the meditative session.

From the usability test, we were inspired by one user's suggestion for a button design, as shown in the image.

The product is a massage pillow placed around the neck. It has options for heat, vibration, and repetition.
